ABOUT US

DURING THE EARLY 1980'S NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION BECAME A MULTICULTURAL ORGANIZATION. THIS WAS PARTLY DUE
TO THE INFLUX OF CARIBBEAN-BORN EMPLOYEES AND EMPLOYEES OF CARIBBEAN DESCENT. AS THE DEPARTMENT DEVELOPED AND
EXPANDED IN STRUCTURE, CARIBBEAN-BORN OFFICERS AND CIVILIANS BELIEVED THAT THEIR CONCERNS AND NEEDS  WERE NOT BEING MET.

AS A RESULT, IN 1990 OFFICERS FROM VARIOUS FACILITIES DECIDED TO FORM THEIR OWN ORGANIZATION WITHIN THEIR RESPECTIVE
COMMANDS. AS THE WORD SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE DEPARTMENT, THESE OFFICERS CAME TOGETHER AND DECIDED THAT AN ALL
INCLUSIVE ORGANIZATION WOULD BE MORE BENEFICIAL TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS AND NEEDS OF CARIBBEAN EMPLOYEES. AN
EXECUTIVE BOARD WAS FORMED AND IN 1994 THE EXECUTIVE BOARD APPLIED FOR FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION STATUS AND IT WAS
GRANTED BY THE DEPARTMENT. THE ORGANIZATION WAS NAMED "THE ASSOCIATION OF CARIBBEAN-AMERICANS IN CORRECTION (ACAC)",
AND THEREBY BECAME A NON-PROFIT 501(C)3 ORGANIZATION.

IN ADDITION TO FOSTERING CARIBBEAN CULTURE THROUGHOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND OTHER COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY,
THE ORGANIZATION ALSO HELPS THE RESIDENTS OF THE CARIBBEAN ISLANDS RECOVER FROM DAMAGE SUSTAINED FROM NATURAL
DISASTERS. WE PROVIDE DISASTER RELIEF AID TO VICTIMS OF DISASTERS IN THE FORM OF MONETARY AND TANGIBLE GOODS. WE COLLECT
AND DONATE FOOD, CLOTHING, AND TOYS TO THE UNDERPRIVILEGED; WE ALSO PROVIDE QUALITY PROGRAMS, SUCH AS, MENTORING,
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES, YOUTH-INACTION INITIATIVES THROUGH SPORTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, AND SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SUPPLIES.
A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO CARIBBEAN CULTURE.

THE CARIBBEAN ENCOMPASSES 28 INDEPENDENT STATES AND TERRITORIES. WITH A POPULATION OF APPROXIMATELY 38,000,000 PEOPLE,
THERE ARE 4 OFFICIAL LANGUAGES; SPANISH, FRENCH, ENGLISH, AND DUTCH. CARIBBEAN CULTURE DEPICTS THE INFLUENCE OF THE
EUROPEAN SETTLERS INCLUDING EAST INDIAN, CHINESE IMMIGRANTS, THE INDIGENOUS CARIBE, AND THE TIANO PEOPLE. HOWEVER, THE
FACE OF THE CARIBBEAN IS PREDOMINANT AFRICAN.

THE CARIBBEAN IS ALSO RICH WITH ROMANCE, MUSIC, FOOD, ART, DANCE,  ADVENTURE, AND ENTERTAINMENT. FOR TRAVELLERS
WORLDWIDE, THIS GROUP OF ISLANDS IS NOTHING SHORT OF PARADISE. BELOVED FOR THE TROPICAL CLIMATE, CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER,
CLEAR BLUE SKIES, BREATHTAKING BEACHES, AND WARM FRIENDLY PEOPLE.

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY INFLUENTIAL CARIBBEAN-AMERICANS IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.  CARIBBEANS HAVE
BEEN CONTRIBUTING TO THE WELL-BEING OF AMERICA SOCIETY SINCE ITS FOUNDING. ALEXANDER HAMILTON, THE FIRST SECRETARY OF
THE TREASURY, WAS FROM ST. KITTS.

CARIBBEAN-AMERICANS HAVE BEEN LEADERS IN EDUCATION, GOVERNMENT,SPORTS, JOURNALISM, FASHION, THE MILITARY, MUSIC,
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, THE ARTS, AND MANY OTHER FIELDS. CARIBBEAN-AMERICANS OF ALL WALKS OF LIFE HAVE ADDED TO THE
VITALITY, SUCCESS, AND PROSPERITY OF AMERICA. INCLUDING JEAN BAPTISTE POINT DU SABLE (HAITI); SHIRLEY CHISOLM (MOTHER -
BARBADOS, FATHER - GUYANA ); COLIN POWELL (JAMAICA); HARRY BELAFONTE (JAMAICA); MARCUS GARVEY (JAMAICA); SIDNEY POITIER

THESE SMALL CARIBBEAN ISLANDS HAVE WIELDED A LARGE CULTURAL INFLUENCE THAT HAS SPREAD ACROSS THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA. CARIBBEAN-AMERICANS ARE HERE TO STAY, WE ARE CONTRIBUTING IN MAKING A BETTER AMERICA.
ACCORDING TO AN ARTICLE WRITTEN BY MICHAEL FORD, ENTITLED "THE CARIBBEAN IMPRINT ON AMERICA", GENERATIONS OF
CARIBBEAN-AMERICANS HAVE HELPED SHAPE THE SPIRIT AND CHARACTER OF AMERICAN. THESE INDIVIDUALS ARE JUSTLY PROUD OF THEIR
CARIBBEAN ROOTS, AND THEY ENRICHED THE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE BY SHARING THEIR TRADITIONS, HISTORY, AND CULTURE.

THE PEOPLE OF THE CARIBBEAN STRIVE TO MOVE BEYOND THE PHYSICAL BARRIERS OF THE WATERS THAT DIVIDE THEM, TOWARDS A
STRONGER, MORE COHESIVE AND DYNAMIC CULTURE; ONE OF GREAT UNDERSTANDING, COOPERATION, AND INTEGRATION. ACCORDING TO
FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF JAMAICA P. J. PATTERSON, "CULTURE IS THE LINCHPIN THAT BONDS US AS A PEOPLE AND IS VITAL TO OUR
QUALITY OF LIFE", AND LIKE THAT OF ANY OTHER COUNTRY, IS REFLECTED IN EVERYTHING THAT WE DO. OUR CULTURE INFLUENCES AND
AFFECTS OUR BELIEF SYSTEM AND THE GOALS WE SET FOR OUR FUTURE.
